Wrigley Field – A Cathedral of the Game

Wrigley Field has always been hailed as one of the most historic stadiums in baseball, and this past June I was finally able to take in a Cubs game there. Over the years I have watched games at Wrigley field on TV more that once, so I was very excited to see it in person. It was pretty cool to see the stadium from the outside, but a person hasn’t really experienced Wrigley until they have been inside to see a ballgame. As soon as I walked into the stadium and saw the field I could sense the great baseball atmosphere; it just felt like an ideal place to watch a baseball game. It was an atmosphere that a person just doesn’t get at the Metrodome, which is the only pro baseball stadium that I had been to up to this point. It was pretty cool to see the ivy on the outfield wall (I suggest that you don’t touch or try to touch the ivy because security personnel don’t like that very much), the bleachers on the buildings across the street, and the old scoreboard in centerfield. Then as the game started I could tell just how great the Cubs fans are. With every Cubs hit and run scored a person could tell just how passionate these fans are for the Cubs. A person could tell this during the singing of Take me out to the Ballgame and Go Cubs Go, which is sung after the game, as well.

Now for the game itself, I have to say that I am a casual Cubs fan (The Twins are definitely my favorite team though), so it was nice to see them get off to a strong start by scoring some early runs. The Orioles tried to stay in the game with Jay Payton hitting two home runs in the game. In the end though, Kerry Wood came in to get the save with three consecutive strikeouts in the ninth to secure a 7 to 4 victory.

Overall I have to say that I had a great experience at Wrigley Field. It was a nice evening with friends while on a road trip in Chicago, the game went well, and I – as well as many other fans – got an autograph from Kerry Wood after the game.
